Have you ever sat eyes glazed over, staring at your computer screen, unsure what to write? Most of us have at one point or another, and it’s never a fun feeling.
For many Etsy sellers, this happens when you sit down to brainstorm new product ideas or finalize your tags, description, and title. Fortunately, new technologies, like ChatGPT, can give you a strong starting point to help you overcome these blocks so you can start making money from your Etsy listings.

What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a vast language model designed by OpenAI that understands and generates answers to many questions. The information it provides is based on research from the Internet and other sources.
While ChatGPT has many strengths, it still has many shortcomings you’ll want to keep in mind, including:
- Strange or obtuse wording: ChatGPT often answers questions in a very “dictionary-like” way. Since it’s not human-generated, the text won’t typically have the same emotion or cadence that a human writer can convey. Remember, selling your products to others means understanding their needs and wants and addressing them with your product. Using ChatGPT to develop Etsy descriptions can help you if you’re facing writer’s block, but you’ll want to adjust the writing to come across as human and engaging.
- Possible inaccuracies: While ChatGPT has filters to help with accuracy, it pulls information from sources such as the Internet. You may end up with incorrect information if the filters don’t flag a source as inaccurate or unreliable. While this doesn’t affect brainstorming ideas for your Etsy Shop, it’s important to note when checking trademark and copyright for wording or phrases on your designs.
How to Use ChatGPT for Brainstorming
Need help with what to design next? ChatGPT can generate lists of ideas for your shop in minutes following these steps:
- Visit OpenAI’s website here.
- Scroll down and click on “Try ChatGPT.”
- Sign up for an account if you don’t have one already (it’s free!)
- Scroll down to the bottom of your dashboard and type in your text-based prompt.
- Wait for ChatGPT to generate a response to your prompt.
For example, I typed in “text-based design ideas for a gift for someone from California,” and ChatGPT came up with these ideas:
- "California Love" T-Shirt: Create a stylish t-shirt featuring the words "California Love" in bold, colorful letters. You could even incorporate the state flag or other iconic California imagery into the design.
- "West Coast Best Coast" Mug: Design a mug that showcases the sentiment that the west coast (and California in particular) is the best coast. Add some graphics or illustrations to make it more visually appealing.
- "Golden State" Keychain: Create a keychain featuring the phrase "Golden State" and an image of the California state outline. This would be a great gift for someone who is proud to call California home.
- "Beach Vibes" Tote Bag: Design a tote bag that features the words "Beach Vibes" in a fun, beachy font. You could even include some cute illustrations of palm trees, waves, and other beachy elements.
- "California Dreamin'" Poster: Create a poster featuring the classic song lyric "California Dreamin'" and some beautiful California imagery, such as the Golden Gate Bridge, the Hollywood sign, or the beaches of Malibu.
